Director of the Department of Research and Education

By order of the Minister of Culture and the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation dated 24/09/2018, Philippe Charlier is appointed Director of the Department of Research and Education at the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, from 1 October 2018.

A graduate of the Université de Lille 2, the École Pratique des Hautes Etudes and the Université de Paris-Descartes, Philippe Charlier is a coroner, anthropologist and paleopathologist.

He is also a university lecturer (first class, French post-doctoral degree allowing its holder to supervise PhD students) and a hospital practitioner (Assistance Publique des Hôpitaux de Paris) attached to the DANTE (EA4498) laboratory at the Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin in Yvelines.

He oversees a multi-disciplinary team working in the fields of forensic archaeo-anthropology and the inter-disciplinary study of non-Western artefacts. As an anthropologist, Philippe Charlier studies the magical-religious rituals surrounding disease and death ("struggle against the unknown"), primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Afro-Caribbean territories.

Philippe Charlier is the author of over 150 scientific articles and around twenty books including “Autopsie de l’art premier ” (Editions du Rocher, 2012) and “Zombis ” (Tallandier, 2015).

Philippe Charlier succeeds Frédéric Keck, Director of the Department of Research and Education at the musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac from 2014 to 2018.
