The art of the Lega of Central Africa

Content

This exceptional collection of Lega art (Democratic Republic of Congo), from the Jay Last Collection held at the Fowler Museum UCLA, presents one of the most important artistic traditions of Central Africa.

These sophisticated and elegant objects form an integral part of the Bwami initiation society and include member badges, found objects used in the first stages of initiation and zoomorphic and figurative sculptures from the age of wisdom. The Bwami, a lifelong guide, teaches members of the Lega society that beauty and moral values are synonymous and that knowledge is power.
